NSF-funded Plant Biotechnology Boot Camp brings high school students to campus

Eight high school students from the tri-state area recently participated in the Plant Biotechnology Boot Camp held at UW-Platteville. The week-long residential camp offered hands-on learning opportunities in the areas of plant biotechnology, genetics, molecular biology, plant pathology and microbiology.

UW-Platteville wraps up inaugural summer coding camps, introduces high school students to growing field

UW-Platteville recently wrapped up its inaugural summer coding camps and hackathon, introducing nearly 60 high school students to the rapidly expanding computer science and cybersecurity fields. The camps – focusing on computer games programming, esports, and cyber defense – were the first of their kind to be offered in the region.

Platteville Community Fund awards scholarships for College for Kids and Middle University

The 91��-Platteville College for Kids program was granted $700 from the Robert and Marian Graham Community Fund, which will provide full scholarships for seven students to attend the 2020 program. The award was received by Jessica Munz, program manager, during the Platteville Community Fund Awards Banquet. This grant will benefit children in kindergarten through seventh grade from the Platteville School District.

Students collaborate with Dodgeville Elementary for Family Math Night

Sixteen 91��-Platteville students recently collaborated with teaching staff at Dodgeville (Wis.) Elementary School to present Family Math Night for students and their families. It was the first time the program has been held for students from Early Childhood through fifth grade.

Students were enrolled in the university’s Teaching Elementary Mathematics course, taught by Dr. Jodean Grunow, senior lecturer of mathematics at UW-Platteville.

Students teach physical education homeschool program

In a long-running partnership between the university and local community, 91��-Platteville health and human performance majors are teaming up with members of the homeschool community through the UW-Platteville Physical Education Homeschool Program. This is a mutually-beneficial opportunity for children to learn about physical activity, personal health and well-being while also teaching future educators how to write and execute lessons for various skill levels and age groups.

UW-Platteville offers opportunity for high school students to earn education credits

To help combat the shortage of teachers in southwestern Wisconsin, especially in rural communities, the 91��-Platteville’s School of Education has begun offering a dual credit course option for high school students.

This spring, twelve Platteville High School students enrolled in the dual credit course, Introduction to Education, taught by Dr. Jennifer Collins, assistant director of the School of Education at UW-Platteville. Collins will serve in this position until July 1, when she will become director of the School of Education.

More than 325 middle school girls from across the tri-state area gathered at UW-Platteville on Feb. 26 and March 26 to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Alliant Energy Pioneering Your Future in STEM is coordinated by faculty, staff and students from the Women in Engineering, Mathematics and Science Program in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science and the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture.
